I Am From

A secondhand poetry prompt from my mother.

An analog photo scan of a river in autumn, bordered by trees and power lines.

Write a poem where every line begins with "I am from," but remember: you can be from more than places.1

I am from the place by the river
I am from Old World immigrants
I am from the pages of many books
I am from the faith carried over miles and millennia
I am from timelessness into time
I am from the prayers of saints unknown
I am from stories told and retold
I am from the am who was and ever yet is,

World without end, amen.
